The name tantalum is derived from the mythological Greek god Tantalus. Tantalus must atone eternally for his mistakes. Standing up to his lips in water, he is unable to obtain the tempting food and drink; the Tantalus torment.
Working with tantalum is comparable to that torment. It demands the utmost from us. Tools quickly become blunt or break, polishing brushes fail to impress and barely produce any shine. The impossible processing, however, does impress Jan. Combined with white gold and diamond, the tantalum yields a prize-winning ring; a 1st prize plus an honorable mention in the 1981 National Diamond Competition. The die is cast, and more tantalum jewelry follows. The collaboration with Pauline Barendse starting in 1995 ignites the tantalum spark.
While processing possibilities were limited in the beginning, laser processing is later employed. Laser experiments lead to combinations and embellishments with gold. The dark tantalum contrasts fantastically with the warm gold color. Tantalum, like titanium, is particularly suitable for jewelry. Both metals are non-toxic and biologically inert; the human body does not reject them.
