Tantalum ring with gold 'Splashes' applied using laser technology.
Tantalum, gold 18krt
While processing options were initially limited, laser processing was later employed. Laser experiments led to combinations and embellishments with gold. The dark tantalum contrasts beautifully with the warm gold color. Tantalum, like titanium, is particularly suitable for jewelry. Both metals are non-toxic and biologically inert; the human body does not reject them.
The name tantalum is derived from the mythological Greek god Tantalus. Tantalus must pay eternally for his sins. Standing up to his lips in water, he is unable to obtain the tempting food and drink; the Tantalus Torment.
Working with tantalum is comparable to that agony. It demands our utmost. Tools quickly dull or break, polishing brushes fail to impress and deliver little shine. The impossible process, however, impresses Jan. Combined with white gold and diamond, the tantalum yields an award-winning ring; a first prize plus an honorable mention in the 1981 National Diamond Competition. The die is cast, and more tantalum jewelry follows. The collaboration with Pauline Barendse, starting in 1995, ignited the tantalum spark.
